House Hunters International

Today we viewed SEVEN different potential houses for rent here in Cheltenham. It was a loooooong afternoon of house-hunting. Envisioning how we would arrange all our furniture in seven different houses in a matter of four hours made my brain hurt. (I suppose that's what happens when you've been away from work for five years...)

Fortunately, the taxing afternoon was well worth it. We found a couple of gems that would be excellent places to call home over the next three years. I've included our top two options House Hunters International style. All the relevant specifications (and a few photos) are listed below. Please weigh in asap -- we need to make a decision by the end of the week!

OPTION A: PITTVILLE
Recent £150,000 Renovation

2 reception rooms, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, 1 car garage
This house is admittedly plain on the outside, but every detail of the property is highest quality. The landlord recently sunk £150,000 ($225,000) into the addition of an extra living room and bedroom, new windows and carpets throughout, additional insulation for energy efficiency, a new fence around the entire property, landscaping galore (the house comes with a gardener), security system, electric remotely operated property gates, and more.
The main living room is bright with views of the garden on three sides and has a gas fireplace.
The kitchen is large and modern and outfitted to the highest standard.  (Just look at that giant AMERICAN sized fridge!)
Two of the best parts of this house are the huge yard (this is the back) and the secure parking for an armada of cars.
HIGH POINTS: Snug, energy efficient, ample storage in the garage, large fenced yard, security system, new fixtures and flooring and appliances, 15 minute walk to town center.

LOW POINTS: Bedrooms are ultra basic with small, high windows (no pictures are shown, but you can see the small windows on the upper level in the first photo of the house), no separate dining room, lacks the character of a period home, 30 minute commute for Nick by car (45 by bike).

ELLA WEIGHS IN:  Our firstborn refers to this as "the brown house with the pretty garden."

OPTION B: MONTPELLIER
Updated Victorian

2 reception rooms, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, street parking
As you can see from the photo, this house is certainly not lacking in character and charm.  It is Victorian to the hilt, and has fortunately been kept up-to-date on the interior with new carpets in the bedrooms, new windows throughout, and fresh paint.  When we viewed this house it was a construction zone.  All the updates are being done as I type, so if we quickly sign a lease soon we might be able to have some input about paint colors, flooring on the main level, etc.
The main living room has a gorgeous bay window, amazing original crown molding, and nice built-in storage.  It conveniently adjoins the second living room (which is almost as big as the main living room).

The kitchen has a gourmet gas range and various ovens, new (blue) cabinetry, and it connects through to a formal dining room with loads of built-in storage.
Master bedroom that spans the entire front of the house and looks out onto a forested area (no houses across the street).

The garden is small, but it is completely fenced in with a gate which is accessible from the street.
HIGH POINTS:  Gorgeous period details with updated floors and windows, three large bedrooms with ornamental fireplaces, large kitchen with formal dining room, 10 minute commute for Nick by car (10 minutes by bike).

LOW POINTS:  Very little attic storage (would require us to rent a storage unit), one tiny bedroom, none of the fireplaces (there are six total) actually work, moderately energy efficient, 25 minute walk to town center.

ELLA WEIGHS IN:  Bitzy calls this house "the castle."

Where will we live for the next three years?  Stay tuned to find out!  :)

  1. Ok....the second house looks picturesque but I think it makes more sense long term to go with the first house. Both seem perfect though :).

  2. i like #2. I think it was the master bedroom that spans the entirety of the house and has those gorgeous windows that clinched it for me... though it's a shame the fireplaces don't work! (Street parking? Always available/easy?) Plus, I like a shorter commute. I like K to get home FAST! ;) Good luck - they're both excellent choices! Glad you all made it there safe!

  3. Wow! As I was reading #1 I thought it couldn't get much better, but I am, indeed, a fan of charm. And one small room could be a playroom or nursery without much trouble (my son's bedroom is TINY) So I would definitely lean #2. The fireplace thing sucks, and the storage sucks. But the location is awesome. Good luck with your choice!

  4. Yay! You made it! Glad to hear the Petty-4 are safe and sound. :) As for choice- I DUNNO! I am a fan of the short commute, but if you'll be home a lot, then walkable town center and big yard = awesome. PS- tiny rooms make excellent nurseries.

  5. On-street parking isn't a huge deal as long as there is enough of it. But usually there isn't enough. And then you are trapped in your house after 4PM because you know if you leave to go anywhere that you won't be able to find any parking when you get back. I would drive by at 9PM to see what the availability looks like. Do you know how to parallel park? Can you do it in a minivan? (You did say you wanted to have another child, right?)

  6. Those bay windows would be hard to pass up! Either way, make some space for the Maguires, we are COMMITTED to visiting the Pettys this time around!

  8. #2...simply because it looks like your home. And every little girl deserves to live in a castle:) But thank goodness you have such great choices, you can't go wrong either way!

  9. As a blog stalker, I feel like I must comment on this. I emailed you a long time about how your living my dream. Anyway, PLEASE go with number 2! What a dream! I'm a sucker for the charm. So this complete stranger, stay at home mom from Texas, is going to be all her fingers and toes that you pick the renovated Victorian and continue living my dream ;)

  10. What a hard decision to make! Loved number #1 but the commute could not be the best but then you are closer to town. Place #2 of course has the charm and says "we live in England and come visit!" I agree with Paul and go by the #2 place at 9pm to see if you would have parking available if you came home late from somewhere. When we moved to England Adam's #1 thing must was to have off-street parking. Also where do people you know live? Are they close to town or on the out-skirts? Because if you think you will be doing play-groups and stuff you might want to be walking distance to them, just a thought. Good luck!

  11. I love charm, but after living in the city for 9 months, I was thrilled to have a parking spot everyday at all hours. With 3 kids (Jason and I are convinced you are pregnant with all this baby talk), street parking might be a pain. Tough choice, glad it's not mine :)

  12. ok I may be the only crazy to say this but #2 isn't my top choice - my big deal with #2 is how attached you will be to neighbors. yuk.a little space is nice. and really NO working fireplaces?! booo.

the commute for #1 is lame but it's not D.C. traffic so maybe not too bad? and a gardener - yes please! and you've got skills Aubrey, you can make that place look fab even if it lacks a little style.
